Match Report
In sadly declaring his unavailability for this fixture, Chris Clay was to say “Gutted as enjoyed my five week run in the side…..no coincidence that won all five!!!!”. Well if ever there was an incentive for a team to debunk a myth, that was it. It seems that to whatever this unprecedented run of form can be put down, Claypole brilliance is not it.
To say that this Repton side looked full of youth, vim and vigour would be an understatement. For many, the even greater incentive was that this was likely their last ever game for the school. They played throughout in a keen, fair and sportsmanlike manner and the ultimate scoreline was a little harsh on them. The Vets, though, had a little vim and vigour in the form of Gendall in midfield, but ultimately it was the guile of Killen and the brute force of the strikeforce that was Repton’s undoing. By half time Lewis had despatched two and whilst the game was not dead, the home side were favourites.
A cocktail of last week’s leftover Tesco Express and a couple of new Co-Op oranges went first to the opposition, courtesy of Bagley’s Schoolboys Secretary role, leaving slim pickings for the home side. But it didn’t really matter.
A third from Lewis and a second half hat-trick from Mornington, celebratory schoolboy squeak muted to avoid the risk of being taken back on the Repton Bus, put the game to bed.
So it turned out that in fact, it was only Clay’s 5 game run in the side that was preventing a clean sheet. Power, Fraser, Bodey, Gorton and Jones are the only players to have played in all 6 wins. Killen, meanwhile, is set for a Christmas sojourn to Brisbane. January is a cold month to sit on the bench, but that is what missing games means these days.
So to Upton Magnates next week …
