Match Report
Same opposition, same shirts, different team.
Obviously smarting from last time out, Convo arrived at Moor Lane bolstered right throughout the pitch, and so it proved in the opening minutes when a competitive game got under way. Game two of the North/South Liverpool World series was never going to be as one sided as the first outing, but with Jimiesta prowling the midfield like his balding Spanish namesake, the home side started brightly. The other Iniesta almost certainly doesn’t own a Luther Blissett shirt though. Levels …
It was no surprise that the Ramblers went one up through the twinkle toed terror from Hertfordshire. His last drop of the shoulder before dragging it on to his left foot sent the opposition line on to the next pitch.
The visitors equalised with a well taken goal against a somewhat static defence. The half time team talk may have been a little harsh all things considered, but I hadn’t shouted at anyone in two weeks and its cheaper than therapy. Unfortunately it didn’t work immediately we went behind to another well taken goal, with a bit of fortune in the build up with a looped pass that dropped between myself and Andy. I’d use a cricket analogy of a catch dropping between gully and fourth slip, but I haven’t got time to look up whether they are real cricket fielding positions. One for you there Jordan!
Parity was restored when I drifted in unmarked at the far post to nod down. Martin and Mornington are becoming very useful decoys when I saunter forward, they all leave the little bald fella alone.
With Gendall running close to 13 km, a lot of it at full pelt, Farrelly now controlling the midfield in metronomic fashion, and Rogers back doing what he does best, getting nailed in tackles, it was only a matter of time before the pressure told, a tidy finish by Farrelly, with some help from a defenders bonce putting the veterans XI 3-2 up. Mornington not to be outdone added a fourth with an excellent left foot finish. It was noticeable that this was the chance he didn’t have time to think about, just think about that, or don’t if you’re Jordan. In a weekend that has been blighted by insane handball decisions we also had our own VAR controversy (video assistant Russ) who ruled out a good Clay goal with a throw in call on the far touchline, it was a fair call in keeping with the Ramblers spirit of fair play, that’s not what I said at the time, but time is a great healer, that and winning.
In many ways this was a more satisfying win and performance than the previous game, we dug in against better opposition and carried on playing, a good start to the season continues and it’s on to the next game.
Up the Ramblers!
