Match Report
The Pollença Hangover was quickly cured. With 24 minutes gone, the Vets were 4-0 up and cruising. The game was all tied up, surely?
4-5-1 is the new 4-4-2, Bodey forced into midfield when it turned out that McGuckin’s Hangover was still just in play. It was his best performance for ages. Mind you, with Killen and Gendall in this form, it would be hard not to look good. Gendall opened the scoring after 5 minutes. It might be stretching it to say the finish was clinical but was certainly effective. He will need to bring his birth certificate along if he keeps playing like this. Mornington added the second. He announced in the changing room before the match that he is trading on his maturity. If so, the squeaking after scoring may have to go.
The free kick that he scored wasn’t a bad effort, to be fair. Eddie Jones got on the end of a great move to volley home the fourth. A deflection? Well just a little one. Convocation became frustrated at some decisions, stemming from the very start when Captain Andy was denied the chance to call tails. In fairness it was a good toss to win, sun and wind helping the home team. Some complacency crept in but 4-0 at half time was a fair reflection of the match.
Tesco Express oranges were poor, but the real shock was that the visitors had brought their own. Have we started a craze?
A soft goal was conceded early in the second half but Gendall scored his second to restore the four goal cushion. It turned out that the slight breeze we played with in the first half was actually quite a strong wind. But as the Vets faded and lost concentration, Convocation showed real character and played very well indeed. Three were scored, one a true “worldie”, and a last minute chance went begging. But the home side were just about worth the win.
Good game this one. The only disappointment was that Richie remains on the treatment table. We hope to see him later in the season.
