Match Report
Game one in a series is always an important marker. How we get on against Convocation dictates how our seasons go, because we play them every other week! Traditionally we start at Shrewsbury, but this is not a traditional season. Under bright sunshine at the ungodly hour of 10:30 am, with the pitch looking resplendent having been marked out 15 minutes before kick off, we got our 2020/2021 season proper underway. A few slack passes early on gave the visitors encouragement, but a text book near post header by Chester from a Clay corner calmed the home team nerves. A second was added with a thumping finish from the left boot of Rogers, well it wasn’t going to be his right boot was it….
With the Rogers and Byrne marauding down the flanks and the midfield being Marshalled by Killen the hosts were in control, and a third was added from the forehead of Mornington before half time. He could talk you through it but he rarely has his eyes open when he heads it so he can’t.
Half time saw me make the difficult decision to bring on Farrelly. Its a shame he’s not calmer on the ball, he could have been a player if he was…..
The second half was a more open affair, as they often are, with numerous chances squandered, meanwhile Power worked on his tan at the tennis court end.
Chester did everything right to put us four up, until an offside Mornington tapped in from a yard before it crossed the line, goal ruled out, knob.
He made amends however by “giving the keeper the eyes” for the fourth, and an admittedly excellent finish for the fifth. The last goal was scored by yours truly, a little dink after a goal mouth melee. You know we’ve had a decent day when I’m attempting, and pulling off a dink.
It may have brushed the thinning Mornington quiff on the way in, but he was offside so he’s not getting it. Also I do the spreadsheet.
Good performances all round, solid at the back to get a rare clean sheet, Martin and the Pressie always in control. Industrious in midfield, Gendall ran nearly 10km in 65 minutes. He warmed down with a 15km run this morning, all with a tight hamstring, lunatic!
Chester ran amok and did exactly what I asked by picking on defenders, and the big lad slotted a hat trick and missed a load of sitters.
A good start to the season proper and the standard is now set.
