After a messy and eventful Presidents dinner the thought of a 10 o’clock kick off seemed impossible to some, but 12 brave ramblers arrived at a wet Moor Lane with the pride of the club at stake.
A loss to the local cricket team would be an all time low for some. Maybe not for those who went to the Everton after party, but it would be close.
With no time for warm ups the game was underway. The early realisation that Harry and Ed, the two wing backs, weren’t scarred by the previous nights antics helped the Ramblers greatly. They were found at every opportunity and chances were created on both flanks with several near misses. Northern pumped the ball long at every opportunity to keep our defenders busy but no real chances were created. 0-0 Half time.
The deadlock was broken early in the second half after another great run down the right from Ed. What appeared to be a great side foot finish into the top bin later turned out to be a misplaced cross but the goal was well deserved.
With the deadlock broken confidence flowed into the ramblers play. Harry picked up the ball up on the left, beat two defenders and drilled it low across the keeper into the corner. A great goal to cap a very good performance.
Next Louis, inspired by Bagpuss’s claims the opposition centre back was an all time great, turned him inside out before cooling slotting past the keeper. Another quality goal.
The fourth came from a towering header from Duffy off the bar and into the top bin from a corner floated to the back post.
The fifth followed shorty after with Chester turning on the edge of the box and smashing it left footed in off the bar. Another quality finish.
The goal of the day followed shortly after. A fantastic passing move from back to front with everyone getting a touch. The 25+ passes ended with a typical close range Mornington finish.
The emphatic victory was sealed by another solo run from Louis, beating Bagpuss’s idol several times before calmly slotting home. 7-0 Ramblers Full Time.
With bragging rights won and pride restored for most, there were plenty of positives to take from the second half into the coming games.
