A seemingly strong squad assembled at Moor Lane for the local derby against SMOB and with the Skipper away at a 70th Birthday Celebration it was down to Bodey to take skippering duties and hopefully break his losing streak for the season.
A strong 4-4-2 lineup saw Finno and Jordan up front with a midfield of Chester, Clay, Bodey, Eddie, a solid back 4 of Gorton, Nick Ayton, Russell, RVP, and Bagpuss in goal. With Kyle Egan as sub.
So this match report could go on at length about how well the Ramblers played and how we took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half: Chester coolly rounding the keeper and slotting home, Finno having a glorious chance from a 50 yard through ball by Bagpuss and lots of good technical football on a bobble ridden pitch. The oppo had plenty of chances but the back four stood firm until it no longer could and the SMOB centre forward slotted into the corner from a precise cross. The most amusing moment of the half was a foul given against Bagpuss for bouncing the ball more than once! A new rule apparently that had everyone stumped.
The second half saw SMOB score from another cross and a header firmly put away into the corner. What followed was glorious from the Ramblers, pressing and hunting the ball down with constant pressure on the SMOB team that rarely saw them leave their half for 25 mins. In the process Ramblers saw 2 stone wall penalties on Chester denied, the second was a truly awful tackle which might have seen more than a penalty against SMOB. All of the 10 Ramblers will be wondering about how we didn’t equalise and Jordan especially will be gutted by the 6 one on ones that he missed. Especially how he managed to head one off the SMOB goal one when it was easier to score.
Anyway a 2-1 loss but we can be proud of our efforts. The majority opinion from the oppo in the pub after was they couldn’t believe how they won that match.
