With a contingent of the 1st Xi squad pretending to themselves that their not over 35 and eligible for the vets, it was left to the newly assembled young guns to make the morning journey to MGS. The addition of a few potential members freshly recruited ensured that the starting XI was still strong.[wpmem_logged_in]
The new surface at MGS was a pleasure to run out on, although time was limited for an intensive warmup. Lining up with a flexible formation the 1st XI quickly imposed themselves on the game and dominated possession in the middle of the park. Chances were limited to begin with but a change in formation led to a more industrious approach that put their back four under pressure. Ben Phillips switched to the left and his hard work covering both centre midfield and left wing ensured MGS had no options . Handley and kinners controlled the centre, winning the majority and distributing it to the attack. More chances began to appear with Shields going close and a number of dangerous crosses not being converted. The press of the midfield rendered the back four of Ste, Duffy, Wise and Adam mere spectators and the imposing Max in goal didn’t face a shot. Half-time 0-0.
A sluggish start to the second half for the Ramblers and MGS had the upper hand although the defence were not troubled and continued the game with composure. A shuffle in attack between Louis, Tom and Jonny led to some meaningful pressure put on the MGS back four and whilst a stronger penalty decision was turned down the referee decided a bear hug on Tom Martin deserved a go from the spot. Tom duly despatched the spot kick into the net for his second goal in as many games. Luke moved to right wing and contributed a number of surging runs to win corners and to try and supply the forward line by teaming up well with his brother Adam. Whilst the game became stretched towards the end no telling pressure was put on the Ramblers and the 1-0 result was a deserved one.
