Ramblers v Spazmodics Cricket Match

1st August 2018, but still we avoided the sunshine.

It was inevitable really. A solid start, great team spirit, solid progress then utter capitulation when the pressure came on. But would the inevitable mean defeat?

The Spazmodics lost the toss and were sent in to bat. Ramblers dominated their innings, Clay with some unexpectedly clean hitting, France with some wholly expected drudgery. Highlights were Clay c Howat Jnr b Howat Snr and a Power stumping from a Mornington near wide. 127 or thereabouts was a challenging but far from impossible target.

Fair batted to retirement, so did Wise. Rogers refused to leave the pitch when adjudged LBW and left himself needing to write a letter of apology to the Chairman; the watching Halls were appalled. But the run chase remained on. Ultimately 3 runs were required from 7 balls. Power came to the crease having drawn 11 as a batting position from the Mornington Lottery but brashly arrived at ten. There were only ten players. Howat Snr tried to run him out but was sent back and was run out himself by about 14 yards. Eastwood managed what Howat failed to do and the retired old men came back in. Fair needed two off the last ball, edged a single and the game was tied.

Too dark for a super over, no-one was going to hit the wickets with a bowl out, so honours were shared and a marvellous selection of Mr Kipling’s cakes devoured.

See you next year …
